Your analogy to JPEG files is incorrect because that format is publicly documented and did not originate or change after the appearance of the latest version of Photoshop. Please feel free to use the DNG converter to convert, then open those files in previous version of Photoshop, free of charge. To my very big surprise Photoshop does not recognize CR2 files.
I hope you have the answer to my question. Is there a DNG converter to download? I wish Adobe would release just one more version for CS3 — this would certainly solve a lot of problems and win them some brownie points. This means that Camera Raw 5 needed to work with Photoshop Elements 6.
