The South American Cruising Experience Published Ponsonby News January 2014

The days pass very quickly when you are at sea. After the hustle, bustle and speed of Rio, being back on board is like going back in time..days seem to flow into each other, interspersed by the occasional forays into Ballroom dance lessons, an hour lying beside the pool, trivia, a movie, two lectures,  pick out a couple of books in the library, an hour in the gym, an hour walking around deck..well you have to do something to stave off the damage of a scone with cream and jam at afternoon tea in the Queens Room. And  don’t forget you have to fit in a whiskey while getting dressed for dinner and a margauritta  in the lobby bar before going into dine. And thats just on the first day. Boy it was busier than I thought.

By day 2, you realise you can’t keep up that pace. something will have to give or by the time you get off, you’ll need a holiday.

We are only a couple of days from Rio, but the weather has changed dramatically.  The night we left Rio there was a terrific  storm happening behind us, great forks of lightening striking out of a massive cloud with  thunder like I have never heard before from great sheets of light  brightening  up the night sky. You can understand how the Monument on top of the hill recently lost a chip off his finger after being struck.

Leaving Rio was a great experience, not only were we followed out by the natural fireworks but the Statue of the Big Jesus is lit by massive LED lighting. The hill below is forest and therefore black at night to match the sky, so the big fella looks like he is flying above the city. The sheet lightning completing the ethereal atmosphere. The guy who decided to light the statue like that had a masterstroke. It was a sight I will never forget.

As the weather deteriorates,  the sea has followed suit and the calm waters that we left on have now turned to something a little more exciting. Last night there was a definite reverberation through the ships as waves would hit us broadside,  the windows on the lowest guest accomodations floor were constantly covered in the wash as the bow would raise and lower through the seas. If level one was experiencing that, I hate to think what the lower crew levels windows were like. I’m lucky that the table I’m on all appear to be likeminded....the bigger the swell...the happier we are.

Not everyone shares our interest.

Tomorrow we hit Montevideo, Queen Victoria’s maiden call and they are throwing lots of information such as lectures and excursion opportunities at us. It looks an interesting old city and easily walkable so going to try and get around on my own, it also sounds like a good opportunity to get some good photographs and taste some great South American meat. Apparently its not a great place to be if you are a vegetarian.

well...time for that whiskey...later...
